Why Isn't My Business Showing Up on Google Maps?
You've got good reviews. Customers like you. But when you search for your own service in town, three other businesses show up on the map and you're nowhere. Here's what usually causes it and what you can fix this week.
First, check how you're searching
Google Maps results change based on where the searcher is standing. If you search from your shop, you'll probably see yourself. A customer across town might not. Search from a few different spots, or ask a friend in another part of town to look, before you decide something's broken.
1. Your profile isn't verified or was suspended
An unverified profile won't show up the way you expect. Log in to your Google Business Profile and make sure it's verified and active. If it was suspended, follow Google's reinstatement steps instead of making a new profile. Duplicates make things worse.
2. Your primary category is wrong
The primary category is one of the strongest signals Google uses. A roofer listed as "General contractor" or a med spa listed as "Beauty salon" will struggle for the searches that matter. Pick the category that matches what people actually search for, then add secondary categories for your other services.
3. Your services and description are thin
If your profile doesn't list the services you want to be found for, Google has less to go on. Add each service with a short, plain description. Write your business description for customers, not for keyword stuffing.
4. Your name, phone and website don't match everywhere
If Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps and old directories list a different phone number or an old address, Google is less sure about you. Pick one version of your business name, phone and website and make every listing match it.
5. The profile looks inactive
Profiles with no recent photos, no posts and unanswered reviews look abandoned. Add real photos of your work, post once a week, and reply to every review, good or bad.
6. You're too far from the searcher
Distance matters, and you can't change where your business is. If you serve a wide area, set your service areas correctly and build pages on your website for the towns you serve. That helps, but it won't fully overcome distance in a crowded category.
7. Your website isn't helping
Google looks at the website linked to your profile. A slow site, or one that never mentions your town or services, gives Google less reason to trust the profile. Make sure the site clearly says what you do and where.
Don't fall for shortcuts
Stuffing keywords into your business name, buying reviews or listing a fake address can get your profile suspended. They're not worth the risk.
